Problem set #1

  • Worth 20% of your total grade. The second problem set is worth 25%.
  • About 37 questions, mostly true/false questions with some multiple choices.
  • You should complete the problem set entirely on your own. Plagiarism will be heavily penalized. Same if you allow your answers to be copied.
  • You should complete the problem set online within 5 hours on Web CT. Make sure you have a reliable internet connection!
  • Available starting: March 14, 2007 11:00 AM. Available until: March 18, 2007 11:00 PM. Duration: 5 Hour(s). Note: if you start at 10pm on March 18, you have only one hour!
  • Note: your completion time is measured from when you click 'Begin Assessment' to when you click 'Finish'. Once the allotted time has expired, you will not be able to save any more questions.
  • Question delivery: One at a time - no revisits. Note: questions must be answered in the order given. Questions can be skipped; but once a question has been answered or skipped, it cannot be revisited.
  • IMPORTANT: Because some students have had problems saving their answers, I have given you three attempts to submit your answers, and I said earlier that your highest score will be used to calculate your grade. However, I notice that some students have been abusing this system. Some students have submitted more than once, each time changing only a few answers in order to maximize their scores (e.g. choosing T in the first attempt and F in the second). This is very unfair to the other students and certainly not my original intention. So here is what I would like to do:
    • If, because of a technical problem, you get very a low score for one of your attempts, then I shall use your highest score as the official score. Example: Two attempts with scores 35, 290. The official score will be 290.
    • In all other cases where the scores of the attempts are close, I shall use the LOWEST score as the official score, unless you tell me by email which attempt is your official answer. Example: Three attempts with scores 310, 335 and 290. The official score will be 290. But if you email me telling me that your first attempt is the official one, then your score is 310. If you email me telling me that your second attempt is the official one, then your score is 335.
    • When you send me your email, give me your full name (your full chinese name if you have one), student id, and which attempt it is that is supposed to be official.
  • Acknowledgement - These students have sent me an email. The last number is the attempt that will be considered to be the official one.
