Written assignment for Dr. Ci's segment of the Senior Seminar

Topic: Put yourself in the position of John Rawls and write a (first-person) response to G. A. Cohen's criticisms in Chapters 8 and 9 of If You're an Egalitarian, How Come You're So Rich?.

Explanatory remarks: (a) With respect to the form and "tone" of such a response, you may find it helpful to take a look at Rawls's "Reply to Habermas" in Journal of Philosophy 92 (March 1995). (b) Some of you may want to acquaint yourself better with relevant aspects of Rawls's work if you feel you are not well enough equipped for the assignment. To this end, you can read relevant portions of A Theory of Justice (consult the endnotes to Cohen's two chapters) and/or Justice as Fairness: A Restatement. A Theory of Justice is available for one-day loan from Loletta .

Length: 1,000-1,500 words. Feel free to write more, though you won't get extra marks just for writing a longer piece.

  • Deadline: 30 March 2007. No comments will be provided on essays received after this deadline.
  • Grace period: until 4 April 2007. Appropriate grade deductions (in the interest of fairness) will be made after the grace period.

Please hand in your essay to Loletta.
