Special projects

Assignment #4: Reflective journal

  • Deadline: Wed 4 Dec 2013
  • Write THREE entries recording your reflections on the lectures, one for each lecture.
  • Each entry (font size 12, double spacing. 1" margin) should NOT be longer than two pages. One page is fine too. The aim is to show that you have thought carefully about some of the issues discussed. Just focus on ONE thing that you find most interesting. Or it could be something you disagree most strongly about.
  • You can write about any lecture starting from week #8 (i.e. 23 Oct). You can also write about the guest lecture or the movie.
  • If you want you can include some photos or pictures. But only if they are directly relevant and contribute significantly to the discussion. But the space they occupy should NOT count towards the page limit.
  • Hand in via moodle. Include your name and student ID, and the name of your tutor. Submit ONE file for all entries.

Assignment #5: Website

  • Deadline: Wed 18 Dec 2013
  • Produce a SINGLE webpage about one of the topics discussed in the course. But NOT on the topic of animal rights or GM food.
  • You are recommended to host the webpage (for free) on Google sites https://sites.google.com/ or use some other similar hosting service. If you need to use any images, a free resource is http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page
  • The page should include a list of references at the end, with at least two reference entries that have not been mentioned in this course.
  • You should provide links from your webpage to other online resources, similar to the entries in http://en.wikipedia.org. These other pages you link to do not have to be written by you.
  • The general objective is to write an interesting and informative summary of a topic that is self-contained and useful for someone who wants to know more about the topic, and which is able to guide the reader to other sources of information to find out more. The style should be like a Wikipedia entry. Since you can provide links to further readings, you do not have to be extremely detailed.
  • When the project is completed, email the link to your TUTOR with your full name, student ID, and tutorial group number. Include YOUR FULL NAME on the webpage please. Check course website for their emails.
  • Here is an example: http://www.bbc.co.uk/ethics/animals/rights/rights_1.shtml. This article will get a B/B+ grade:
    • There is no need to be longer than this article.
    • This article lacks a list of references.
    • The images are more for decoration and play no role in the text. The layout and design are important too because they affect the reading experience.
    • The links to further information in the text can be more useful and systematic. It is not clear why some topics have links and others do not. It would be better for the links to function as links to further discussion if people are interested in following up on some specific issue.
