When he said "If you can call that
freedom", this taxi-driver was doing philosophy, if anyone ever has.
He had a notion of freedom, of the extent to which his way of earning a
living did or did not force him to do things. And he said that from a certain
point of view he was free. But again, he questioned this "freedom".
His freedom not to work was in reality restricted by the need to ensure
an adequate income to support himself and his family. And just by
saying these words, he showed that he stepped back from his circumstances,
and reflected a little about them, raising the question "What is freedom?".
In this way, philosophy begins.
