Philosophy of Religion 2000‑2001 (CH & CJ)

First essay assignment

Write an essay on one of the following questions:

1. What is the role of truth in religion (e.g., Christianity)? Discuss with particular reference to Spinoza, Kierkegaard, and Nietzsche/Heidegger. (You may find it helpful to consider the following questions: Why do believers find it necessary to prove the (objective) truth of God? Have the various attempts to prove the truth of God succeeded or failed, and why? In what ways has Christianity shaped and promoted the desire for truth? How has the search for truth in turn affected religious faith, and why?)

2. How do you understand Nietzsche's announcement "God is dead"? (You may find it helpful to consider the following questions: Do you agree with the idea that nihilism is the logical consequence of Christianity in particular and of Western metaphysics in general, as Nietzsche and Heidegger claim? If you do, explain that logic. If you don't, how would you account for nihilism? If you don't think ours is an age of nihilism, give your reasons.)
