Discontinuity is a key notion in Thom's work. An example of discontinuity is the boundaries of ordinary objects. The boundary of an apple, for instance, is the set of points, called "catastrophe points", such that, if you move from them in one direction by an arbitrarily small distance, you are inside the apple, and if you move from them in a different direction by an arbitrarily small distance, you are outside it.
