§1. THE PROVENANCE OF THE MYSTERIES
The Mysteries of Crito of Samos came to light when a papyrus was found in the Egyptian sands in 1927. They tell how Crito was called on to solve problems in Greek cities for a fee. A number of these Mysteries resemble problems which a modern private investigator might face. They also form a partial narrative of Crito’s life. The dates of the seven episodes in this edition are from about 448 BC to about 423 BC.
