Ryle’s ingenious speculations have had a mixed reception. I find it hard to accept his view, simply because the narratives have a strong autobiographical feel.
But I shall not engage in learned controversy over the provenance and authenticity of the Mysteries with scholars such as Wilamowitz and Ryle, both of whom seem to have had access to Crito’s Mysteries in Greek.
The further mystery for us today is where these texts have gone. Despite considerable efforts, I have found no trace of them, except through the translations of Dina unearthed by Icarus, as described elsewhere in this Companion.
